Living in the past and future

In the book titled “The Teachings of Buddha” which was written nearly a century ago in 1925, there is a quote with evergreen resonance. The quotation, which comes from Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, goes like this: “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly”.

The saying basically hammers the nail on its head. It is a practical approach that begs the simple question - why thinking about the past or future rather than enjoying the moment? Choosing to reside in the past or future is detrimental because it swindles the enjoyment that the present brings you.

Even more so, it robs you of truly living. If you change your objective and start focusing on the present moment, there are multiple advantages of adopting such an approach.

Smile More Often

The ideal way to live your life is to smile more! For example, try to live in the moment, take each day as it comes and begin each morning with a smile on your face. It may sound clichéd, but it can be quite effective.

Smiling and being optimistic means that you are in the ascendancy when it comes to your attitude. You get to enjoy your present and live life king size! Being negative and mulling over what has happened in the past or what is likely to occur in your future only cultivates more negativity in your life.

Therefore, be optimistic and expect better from yourself. This way, you can be more hopeful of the future.

Love what you do

One of the main reason life tends to become monotonous is if you have a 9-5 job that you never seem to enjoy. There is wisdom in the fact that if you truly enjoy what you do, then it will never seem like a chore to you.

However, there are days and weeks when the going gets tough and you simply have to bide your time and get stuck in. Also, working during the week thinking of the weekend is the same as working in the present, but thinking about your future.

Why not just enjoy what you do now? This may be done by either seeking a fresh challenge and a role that you are more likely to enjoy. Finding work that you appreciate and one that does not introduce overwhelming negative energy in your life is vital.

It is acceptable to dream about the future and harbor aspirations and expectations. However, in light of that, one must continue working hard in the present. This is the only way to improve yourself in the future.

Whether this is done in a professional or personal capacity, it ultimately boils down to the fact that you must never lose sight of your aims and keep working hard. The past is already gone, but the future may bring the realization of your biggest dreams and hopes with it.
